Glam rocks: how to get the Hollywood look for your home

15th February 2016
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, you can’t have failed to notice that it’s movie awards season – BAFTAs, Golden Globes and, of course, the iconic Oscars, which are being held in Tinseltown on 28 February. All of which got us thinking about Hollywood glamour, and how nice it might be to inject a bit of LA luxe into our homes this side of the pond.

Now, we’re not suggesting you take it as far as the godfather of gilt, Liberace – there’s only so much bling anyone can take. It’s more about adding elements of ‘wow’ to what’s already there with glamour furniture and Hollywood-inspired décor to create sophisticated spaces, or little ‘pockets of luxury’ around your home.

After all, relaxing in a boudoir-style reading area in the corner of the lounge, or getting ready for work in a Bardot-esque dressing area is a fast-track way to feeling like a millionaire (even if, like us, you’re still waiting for your lottery numbers to come up!). And the really good news is, it’s super-easy to pull off this look…

How to get your glam on

All you need are a few well-chosen statement pieces and some clever styling hacks to up the fab-u-lous factor.

1 Shape

Classic furniture shapes and styles work best for the luxe look – wing-backed chairs, Chesterfield sofas and that staple of every starlet’s home, the chaise longue. As always, the devil is in the detail and tufting, button backs and curved legs will all add to the look.

2 Fabric  & texture

Luxe is a truly sensuous look, so unsurprisingly it centres around sumptuous upholstery fabrics that not only look opulent but feel beautiful too – think velvet, leather and suede and you won’t go far wrong. Texture will add much-needed contrast too, so once you’ve chosen your sofa or chair, layer it up with accessories in a variety of tactile finishes, such as smooth satin cushions or indulgent angora throws.

3 Colour

Light or dark, the choice is yours with this trend. Pale on pale shades – whites, greys and creams – work wonderfully well together, especially when teamed with occasional pieces such as side tables in metallic silver or mirrored dressing tables. For a deeper, richer look, think about purple, chocolate or even animal-print furniture – but this time paired with warmer shades of copper, bronze and, of course, gold.

4 Silver-screen styling

Four ways to truly channel your inner Marilyn…

  • Wallpaper

Create a feature wall with a panel of dramatic statement wallpaper. Keep it plain, textural and dark for a moody look, or go for bold with a geometric or over sized floral print.

  •  Lighting

Ever fancied a chandelier? Now’s the time to go for it, especially in a room where you wouldn’t expect to find one, such as the bedroom or kitchen. If that’s not your scene (or you just don’t fancy all the dusting) then create pools of mood lighting next to your glamorous chair or sofa with table lamps or angled floor lamps.

  •  Mirrors

No, not for looking at yourself! Mirrors – or indeed any reflective surface – are the perfect way to add subtle sparkle to your scheme. In bedrooms, a mirrored or pearlised dressing table will zing, while with mirrored coasters or lamp bases will brighten up dark wood side tables.

Area rugs are a great way to create a delineated space in an open-plan room. Unleash your inner beast with exotic animal prints or a fluffy shag pile number. Just remember, less is more though – you’re not trying to recreate Elvis’ jungle room!
